School Readiness - Building Strong Foundations for Lifelong Success

At WCOI Head Start/Early Head Start, we understand that the first five years of a child’s life are crucial to lifelong development. During these early years, children's experiences significantly influence brain development and help form the neural connections essential for language, reasoning, problem-solving, social skills, behavior, and emotional well-being. We recognize that families and communities are vital partners in preparing children for lifelong learning and school success.

We believe school readiness is more than learning letters and numbers. It involves nurturing the whole child, helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to succeed in school and beyond. Our comprehensive approach ensures that children are ready to learn, families are ready to support their child’s development, and schools are ready to welcome and engage each child. We value how positive early learning experiences build confidence, encourage social interaction, and broaden a child’s understanding of the world.

To support this vision, WCOI HS/EHS implements the Creative Curriculum for Preschool and the Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers—both research-based and aligned with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework: Ages Birth to Five. These curricula promote school readiness across all domains of development, including cognitive, physical, language, and social-emotional growth. Our teaching teams individualize learning experiences based on each child's unique developmental level, needs, and interests.

We believe that play is a powerful pathway to learning. With intentional teaching, meaningful materials, and uninterrupted time to explore, children develop curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Each child engages in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities that foster intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth—whether in center-based or home-based settings.

Ultimately, our goals and objectives are guided by our mission: to ensure that every child in Washington County is prepared for school success and that every family is empowered to become strong, independent, and thriving members of their community.
